After years of studying (Rotterdam Conservatory, The Netherlands) and working as musicians and actors in The Netherlands, Marloes Oudeman, Stu Warmerdam and Jaco van den Dool decided to go on a musical adventure in Asia.
Luckily they ended up settling down in Kathmandu, where Marloes and Jaco started teaching piano and vocals at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory. Additionally all three of them are involved in groundbreaking musical projects with the well known Nepali band “1974 AD”.
The musical style of “Poesie & the Fags” would be best described as a mix of jazz, soul, easy listening and pop music with a special attention to close harmony voicing.
This means they regularly perform at sophisticated (dinner) parties for embassies and 5 star hotels (Everest, Shangri-la, Hyatt, Dwarika, etc) as well in bars and clubs (New Orleans, Tamas, 1905)
And because of their musical talents they are able to adjust or even write a program for every occasion or event. Lets hope Nepalis able to keep this new vocal trio within its borders!
Jaco van den Dool (born 31-01-1980, The Netherlands)
Jaco got in touch with music from an early age. He started taking piano lessons at the age of eight. After successfully completing Secondary Music school, getting a degree at the Rotterdam Conservatory seemed an obvious choice.
In 2002, he graduated sub cum laude at the music education department (1st grade) as a “Bachelor of music in Education”.
After the conservatory he took more private classical piano lessons at the “Rotterdam piano institute” to make sure he would maintain a high level of playing. At the same time he worked as a pianist for different choirs and orchestras.
From 2002 till 2007 he worked as a music instructor at a Dutch secondary school. Besides teaching music to all grades he was also conductor of the school big band and leader of the annual school musical (“Cabaret” and “Hair”).
In addition he worked as a pianist and singer in the stand up comedian duo “Annika and Jaco ook”, that won several prices at prestigious festivals in Holland.
In 2007 Jaco decided to leave his busy life in Holland to look for some musical adventure in Asia. After travelling through Asia and the Middle East for more than one year he randomly met the founders of the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory and decided to work with them. This decision was quit easy to make since KJC is a great institute with potential to contribute to the growing Kathmandu music scene.
Marloes Oudeman (born 08-02-1980, The Netherlands)
Marloes grew up in a very musical family and started taking piano lessons at an early age. Soon, she was playing Pop, Jazz and Latin in several bands. At the age of 17, she started her studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory (School Music Department 1 st grade) and graduated in 2002.
In her second year at the Rotterdam Conservatory, she combined her studies with vocals at the Pop Academy and start working as a singer.
The last 6 years, she works as a music and drama teacher at a secondary school, grades k7 to 12. In addition, she produces big theater productions, as artistic leader she was dealing with the direction, choreography and music.
Also, she did a lot of backing vocals in various bands and in 2005 she started her study for theatre director and actor.
In May 2007 she gave up everything to start traveling for a year around Asia, worked for a while as a dive master, but since a few months she exchanged the Indonesian oceans for the Kathmandu Jazz conservatory.
Currently she teaches vocals, theory and choir and gives teachers and theatre production trainings at KJC and is playing with her own Dutch vocal trio “Poesie & the Fags” and in several other musical projects with friends.
